Now that we have completed the reading of George Orwell’s classic Animal Farm, it’s time for you to show how well you understood the story. We are going to complete this final project for the year using a strategy called “text reformation”. This is when you take a text (like the novel) and transform it into another type of text (like a children’s book). This strategy will help you identify main ideas, cause and effect relationships, and themes. It will also allow you to practice your skills in sequencing, generalizing, and making inferences.
Here is a great example of a text reformation using Animal Farm. These students took Orwell’s novel and reformatted it into an ABC book. Take a look. ABC’s of Animal Farm
Working in your groups, you are also going to reformat the book; however, you are going to choose one of three pictures books by which to model your reformatting. Your group will choose one of these three books by which to model:
- If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura J Numeroff
- Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. & Eric Carle
- The Napping House by Audrey Wood
Working with your group, you will summarize the characters, plot line, and theme(s) of Animal Farm with your reformatted story. Your final product will be a powerpoint presentation.
Please review the rubric carefully with your group. You will have only until Friday, 5/21/10 to complete this project. There is absolutely no more time after that. We will be in the lab Tuesday, 5/18/10, thru Friday, 5/21/20.
All powerpoints are to be saved in my folder on the S: Drive at school. That means if you work on your project at home, you must have the means to get the work transferred to the folder on Lanier’s server. Do not create a problem for yourself by not following these directions.
